Became a disciple of Kamesuke Nakawa, playwright, around 1772.
His position in the Osaka Kabuki circles established around 1781. He went to Edo twice. He rewrote many old plays and thereby acquired the nickname of Launderer Shimesuke. Actually, he had also creative talent and wrote good plays.
