Shin Hongo was born in Sapporo City.
Graduated from Tokyo Higher School of Arts and Crafts (1928).
Exhibited works annually at exhibition of Kokugakai ultimately becoming member of that organization (1934). As members of its sculpture department seceded in a body and newly established sculpture department within Shinseisakuha-Kyokai. After World War II went to Europe and came home via Russia. Among his principal works is Wadatsumi-no-Koe (The call of the Ocean), statue in memory of students killed in war. Author of "The Beauty of Sculpture."
