Shinichi Hoshi was born on September 6, 1926, in Tokyo, Japan.
Hoshi attended the Tokyo University and graduated from the department of agricultural chemistry in 1948.
Hoshi was the author of over one thousand stories and contributor to periodicals, including Hoseki and Shosetsu Shincho. Featuring a more satirical style than other writers in his genre, Hoshi often points out flaws in society through his short stories. Hoshi has also written in other genres, including detective stories and fantasy. He has penned works for a juvenile audience, as well as published non-fiction works such as a play, essays, biographies, and travel writing. Shinji Maki, writing in Twentieth-Century Science Fiction Writers, declared that Hoshi’s “writing is extremely refined, readable, and fairly attractive, neither ambiguous nor pompous.” Maki further noted Hoshi’s popularity in Japan, remarking that “even a reader who dislikes science fiction or fantasy would have read one or two of his short-short stories.” Hoshi was also a co-founder of the fanzine Uchijin with Takumi Shibano.
Hoshi was a member of the PEN, the Mystery Writers Association of Japan, the Science Fiction Writers Club of Japan and the Agricultural Chemistry Society of Japan.
