Shinna was a Japanese scholar priest of the Shinsei school of the Tendai Sect. An avid collector of Buddhist literature, he visited many libraries and treasuries to copy rare books. A good amateur painter he copied many famous paintings of former days. Was known as Soen of Sairaiji Temple.
Shinna was born in 1786, Kyoto, Japan. Son of a Shinto priest at the Kitano Shrine in Kyoto. Family name: Sugawara.
Entered priesthood at Ohara in Kyoto and became the 31st head priest of the Sairaiji Temple in Ise Province (Mie Prefecture).
