In 1318 Shinno Kuninaga was appointed crown prince when Emperor Godaigo ascended the throne but died before being crowned in 1326. After his death strife between the Jimyoin and Daigakuji families for the throne became more keen till the Shogunate stepped in and recommended Prince Kazuhito, the son of Emperor Gofushimi as heir, with the compromise that the Emperor in future would be selected alternately from each family. This ruling is known in history as the Bumpo Conference.
