Background
Shinno Takehito was born in 1862. He was tenth in the generation of the Arisugawa family, and fourth son of Prince Taruhito Arisugawa. He was originally named Sawa-no-Miya.

Shinno Takehito was born in 1862. He was tenth in the generation of the Arisugawa family, and fourth son of Prince Taruhito Arisugawa. He was originally named Sawa-no-Miya.
In 1874 he attended the Naval College and five years later embarked on the Iron Duke, then flagship of the British Navy, for further training and was a cadet at the Greenwich Naval Staff Officers College (1881).
He made an extensive tour of Europe and America (1889) along with his wife. He attended the Diamond Anniversary of Queen Victoria (1896) and the wedding of the then Crown Prince of Germany by proxy (1905).
