Shinsai Udagawa studied the Dutch language under Gentaku Otsuki. Also studied pharmacology.
Shinsai Udagawa revised his father-in-laws' book Naika Senyo (Essentials of Medicine). Later compiled Ensei Ihan (Textbook on Medicine of the Far West) and published a summarized edition of that book under the title of Han-i Teiko (Manual of Medicine) which was hailed as the ideal textbook of medicine at the time.
Shinsai Udagawa became son-in-law of his master Genzui.
