Around Shinza Kamiyui, Mokuami Kawatake based his famous kabuki drama Tsuyu Kosoae Mukaslii Hachijo, (literally a lady's sleeve of Hachijo in the rainy season), which was first staged at the Nakamuraza Theatre, Edo (1873). The story tells of the love affair between Okuma, daughter of a shopkeeper named Shirakoya, and her father’s servant named Chushichi and how Shinza tries to blackmail the girl till he is killed by Yatagoro-Genshichi, a go-between.
