Shinzei was born in 1443 in Japan. Said to be a descendant of Tsurayuki Kino, noted poet.
Shinzei became a priest in his boyhood and studied under Priest Keishii on Mount Hiei, staying there for more than 20 years, without descending even for a brief period.
Shinzei was a founder of the Shinzei school of the Shingon Sect. He received the title of Acharya (1467). At the request of many priests, he lived at the Saikyoji Temple in Ise Province (Mie Prefecture) and turned it into a great training institution. When the temple was stormed by anti-Shingon mobs, he fled to Echizen Province (Fukui Prefecture).
The following year, he returned to Ise and founded the Renshoji Temple. He once delivered sermons for 48 consecutive nights (1495).
