Background
Takata Shinzo was Born in Aikawa, Niigata Prefecture, 1852. He was the seventh son of Magotaro Amano.

Education
At an early age he was adopted by the Takata family and put to work at the age of 13 in a local office.
Career
When the English Minister Parkes came to Sado (1867) he served on the committee that was formed to receive him.
Three years later, through the good offices of an Englishman he found a job with an English firm at Tsukiji, Tokyo, which he helped to prosper by securing large orders from government offices, Japanese companies, schools, etc. This did not last long for with the government proclamation of 1880 forbidding government departments to buy direct from merchants the firm had to close down.
Shinzo, however, bought up the company and went on an extensive business tour of Europe and America (1877) and established branch offices of his firm Takata & Company at New York and London. His business expanded considerably and at one time he was considered a keen rival to the mammoth Mitsui Bussan and Okura Company.
