Shirdzaemon Yamanouchi was an agriculturalist. He was a retainer of Satsuma Clan (Kagoshima Prefecture). He was said to have imported tobacco seeds from China during the Keicho Era (1596-1614) and he cultivated them with great success on his farm, which came to be popularly known as Kokubu tobacco.
