Shiro Shirahata served an apprenticeship under photographer Koyo Okada from 1951 to 1956. He has been a freelance photographer since 1958. Shiro Shirahata helped organize the Nipon Alpine Photographer's Association in 1967. The photographer's main area of interest is photography of mountains, primarily Japanese and the European Alps; in the 1980s he was working on the Himalayas.
