He entered the Imperial Navy.
Rose to become captain and then resigned due to differences with high officials in 1918.
Began studying Micronesian languages as they applied to ancient Japanese. Michiyasu Inoue, Eikyu Matsuoka and Kunio Yanagida are his brothers.
