historian entered philosophy course of Tokyo University, but later switched to Japanese history course (graduated, 1937).
Career
Until end of war served on editorial staff of Fuzanbo Publishing Company and with Japan Publishing Association and Asahi Shimbun. Meantime published theses on systems of family, villages, marriage and slavery of Nara Period in which he attempted to clarify the fundamental structure of ancient state from standpoint of historical materialism, using as principal materials the documents in Shoso-in. After the war published "Formation of Medieval World" (1946), meantime accepted appointment as professor of Hosei University and is advocating establishment of "People’s History" as distinguished from traditional academic history.
