Shobo Yamato was born either in 832 in Yamato (Nara Prefecture) or Sanuki Province (Kagawa Prefecture).
He became a disciple of Shinga (847) and, of Shinnen (880).
Erected a statue of Kongo-Zao, a Buddhist deity, on the summit of Mount Kimbu and made it accessible by starting a ferryboat service up the Yoshino River (889). Was made chief priest of the Jokanji Temple. He was accorded the title of bishop and built the Tonan-in Temple and became its first chief priest.
