Yamada Shohei graduated from Nisho-Gakusha College in 1918.
Yamada Shohei made extensive tour of South China in 1920 and later of North China (1922), which served to widen his intellectual horizon. Personally, he had a typically off–hand manner and this characteristic also shows in his works which are known for their dignity. Yamada was also good in sumi (Chinese ink) pictures, in which field he followed in the footsteps of Usen Ogawa. Has also turned out original works of wood carving. After the war he became judge at Nitten (Japan Art Exhibition). Also he was a lecturer of Tokyo Gakugei Daigaku (University of Liberal Arts).
