Background
Shoichi was born in 1852. The second son of Tachu Goto. Shoichi was adopted by the Iwanaga family.

After graduating from Keio University he proceeded to England and then America for further studies (1870). Upon return, he worked briefly for Mitsubishi Company and then joined the NYK Steamship Company (1885). He stayed with this firm for 30 years and rendered great services both to it and to Japan's shipping in general.
