Shojiro Sawada graduated from Waseda University's Literature Department.
Shojiro Sawada was an actor of the Bungei Куoкаі, a theater group led by Dr. Shoyo Tsubouchi of the university. His stage debut was made in 1913. After the Bungei Kyokai disbanded, he joined the Geijutsuza Theater Group.
After leaving the Geijutsuza, he established Sliinkokugeki (New National Drama) which was for the masses (1917). The Shinkokugeki Group also played such kabuki classics as Kanjincho and Sukeroku. The group was well received by the masses mainly for sword-fighting plays it customarily produced.
