Background
Shokei was born in 1341. He was said to have been a son of Yoshimitsu Shiroyoshi, daimyo of Iwase, Hitachi Province (Ibaraki Prefecture), Japan.

Education
He became a disciple of Ryojitsu in 1348 and studied Buddhism, Confucianism and Shintoism.
Career
Shokei became chief priest of the Jofukuji Temple in Hitachi in 1386 and later founded the Denziiin Temple.
