Background
Shokei was born in 1667 in Omi Province (Shiga Prefecture), Japan.
Career
He restored the Homyoin Temple in Omi Province (Shiga Prefecture). He became a priest in 1675. He retired and lived near Ishiyama on Lake Biwa (1696).
He engaged in a series of debates with Reiku. He founded the Shorensha, a Buddhist society in 1708 and practiced nembutsu (invocation of the name of Buddha). He also wrote many books.
