Blinded and infancy, he became a masseur—a profession for the blind—in Uji near Kyoto. When he entered a temple at the age of 25 and heard some one reading Daigaku, a Confucian classic, he was greatly inspired by it. He had sutras read to him and asked questions, in tms way acquiring great knowledge. Became an adviser to Lord MasayuKi Hoshina of Aizu (Fukushima Prefecture). Many other lords asked for his advice.
