Shoshin was born in 1187 in Hitachi Province (Ibaraki Prefecture), Japan.

He became a disciple of Honen when he was 17 years old and later was taught by Shinran.
He was a founder of the Ho-onji Temple in Chiba Prefecture. He followed Shinran to Echigo Province (Niigata Prefecture) when he was exiled. Later, at the request of Shinran, he founded the Ho-onji Temple at Yokosone, Shimo-osa Province, as headquarters of the Shinshii Sect in the Kanto District.
