Shozo Kutani learned to paint ceramics from "Akae-no-Yujiro", and others at Wakasugi Village.
Shozo Kutani was engaged by Rokuemon Yabu, when the latter founded Ono Ceramic Kiln at Ono Village (Kaga Province). Later he worked under Ryosho, a Buddhist priest, in Noto, Ishikawa Prefecture. He was the first to use black paint to color ceramic ware. During the Ansei Era (1854-1860) he set up his own kiln and manufactured the ware known as Shozo.
His son-in-law succeeded him and began manufacturing gold-tinted ceramics for export.
