Shozo Namiki was born in Osaka. He was son of a ronin, or masterless samurai, and kept a tea house in Osaka.

Started writing plays under the name of Shozo Izumiya (1748). Afterward, he became a disciple of Sosuke Namiki and changed his surname to Namiki.
