Shuko Shirayanagi was born on January 7, 1884 Shizuoka, Japan.
While still a student at the Philosophy Department, Waseda University, he became interested in literature and social problems and wrote for the magazine Shakaishugi Kenkyu (Study of Socialism).
After graduation, he promoted shakai kodan, stories on social problems for the masses.
He was under the influence of Socialists Shusui Kotoku, Toshihiko Sakai and Shoko Kinoshita.
