Career
His paintings were most¬ly of warriors, wrestlers and beautiful women, most characteristic of him being his wood prints. Both Toyokuni Utagawa and Sharaku Toshusai were deeply influeno- ed by his work. Later, he took to illustrat¬ing books and novels rather too boldly and as a result was punished by the Shogun for his attempts at pornography. It is said his punishment consisted of being hand¬cuffed for 50 days.
