Background

Shunsui Rai was born in Aki Province, Hiroshima Prefecture in 1746.

Education

He went to Kyoto as a youth and studied at the Kontonsha School of Kenzan Katayama. He was a close friend of Nishu Bito and Seiri Koga.

Career

Senshu was appointed a Confucian scholar of the Aki Clan of Lord Asano (1781) and promoted learning in the clan.
