Shunzan Suzuki was born in 1801 in Japan. He was a son of a physician of the Tawara Clan in Mikawa Province (Aichi Prefecture).

Shunzan Suzuki studied Western medicine in Nagasaki and practiced in his native place, where he gained fame. Later he studied Confucianism in Edo under Zen-an Asakawa and Toin Shionoya.
He studied swordsmanship under Yakuro Saito and Dutch military science under Choei Takano.
Shunzan Suzuki wrote many books on strategy. It was under Shunzan's influence that the Tawara Clan adopted a Western military system ahead of other clans and became known for its military might. He died of tuberculosis.
