Shuseki Watanabe was born in 1639 in Nagasaki, Japan.
Disciple of Jakushi Kawamura. Shuseki Watanabe studied Hokuga (northern school of Chinese painting) and various other styles of painting.
Noted for his understanding of the spirit of the paintings of the Sung and Yuan dynasties. Excelled in painting landscapes, portraits, flowers and birds. Appointed Commissioner of Painting of the Shogunate. Later studied Zen doctrine under Priest Ingen and became a Buddhist.
