Born in Iyo (Ehime Prefecture), the son of a salt dealer.

Began studying medicine under his uncle Keisaku Ninomiya (1855) and later proceeded to Nagasaki to learn Dutch (1857). Here he came in contact with Philipp Franz von Seibold, the famous German physician, and in the early part of the Bunkyu Era accompanied him to Edo and acted as his interpreter. Later fell foul of the Shogundte and was placed under house arrest for five years (1857-1862). After the Meiji Restoration in 1868 joined the Osaka Medical School and Hospital. Wrote many books on the Dutch language.
