Career
Presently she is Chairperson of HDFC BANK Limited, and a public interest director on board of the National Stock Exchange of India. She holds a Master"s degree in commerce, and is a Certified Associate of the Indian Institute of Banking and Finance. Gopinath joined the Reserve Bank of India as an officer in April 1972, and has worked in different capacities including Executive Director of the Reserve Bank of India from June 2003 until her elevation to the position of the deputy governor of the Reserve Bank of India. She had also served for two years (2001–2003) on deputation to the International Monetary Fund.
After retirement from Reserve Bank of India, Gopinath was appointed as the Chairperson of National Stock Exchange, which raised the question of conflict of interest.
Post retirement, Gopinath was also appointed as Executive Director of Clearing Corporation of India Limited and as Chairperson of CVC Advisory Board. Gopinath was reputed to be one of the most soft spoken and compassionate Deputy Governors of Reserve Bank of India. She is said to have revived the career of Uma Subramaniam following the 2003 scam at Reserve Bank of India Bhopal.
