Entered the service of the Government of India, 1880, in the Persian Telegraph Dept, of the Indian Government Telegraph. Oriental 2nd Secretary Legation of Teheran, 1886. In attendance on the Shah of Persia during His (or Her) Majesty’s visit to England, 1889.
Consul for Dutch Guiana and also for French Guiana, 1894. Transferred to Palermo for the Island of Sicily, 1898. In charge of the Consulate of Naples, 1 July-6 October 1900. Consul, Naples.
From 1880-1894 collected Persian, Arabic, Turkish, and Hebrew MSS. for the British Museum, vol. iv. of the Persian Catalogue of MSS. being almost entirely devoted to the Churchill MSS. Under the late Gen. Sir R. M. Smith, R.E., K.C.M.G., collected art objects for the South Kensington Museum in Persia. Is now engaged on researches for a history of gold and silver work in Italy, and especially the two Sicilies.
