One topic Opened the way to another, until at length I ended where the work more appropriately begins,-with a discus sion of the nature of the Constitution itself, and of the powers which it does or must grant to the Government. Over itself, and over the Union. Books, laws, facts, even words and phrases, sometimes assume a new aspect, when seen through the medium of feel ings produced by important events and a novel situation. Like many others, I had been content to sit at the feet of the learned doctors of our law, and accept their interpreta tion as correct. But the war has shed new light on the principles and meaning of our Constitution, and revealed in it imperfections, perhaps also powers, scarcely perceived by its makers, and hidden from the superficial and unsuspecting glances of the people, during our long period of prosperity and peace. He graduated from Dickinson College in 1827, read law under Joseph Ingersoll in Philadelphia, and was admitted to the bar a few weeks before he was twenty-one.
The routine of his law practice seems to have engrossed him for many years.
About this time he became interested in farming, and devoting much of his time to Maryland plantations of his in Cecil and Kent counties, he adopted these two names as convenient signatures for his occasional contributions to the newspapers. In 1856 he published a volume of undistinguished verse, Winter Studies in the Country, and wrote for the Philadelphia North American, "Kanzas and the Constitution, " an essay which--endorsing slavery but condemning the political rapaciousness of the South--so recommended itself to a group of Bostonians that they reprinted it as a pamphlet (1856).
Rustic Rhymes, composed largely of two-and-three-stress lines, and The Law of the Territories, urging the retention of the Missouri Compromise, appeared in 1859.
The next year, he published The Laws of Race as Connected with Slavery, an erudite plea for white supremacy, based to a great degree on his acceptance of slavery and his conviction that only people of "Saxon" derivation have any real desire for political freedom. The Trial of the Constitution (1862), his most voluminous work, restates in 390 pages the doctrines he had already promulgated concerning the great national issues of his time.
In the North American Review for July 1864 he published an article, later issued in a pamphlet, called "A National Currency, " upholding in general the policy of the government in issuing legal-tender notes.
He made frequent addresses here and there before associations of farmers, advocating diversification of crops whenever he did not consider it more important to praise Daniel Webster, and to declare the idea of Union the one end to which all other political ideas in America should be made subservient.
His son, named for him, with whom he has sometimes been confused, spelled his first name not Sidney, but Sydney.
Fisher wrote several books and delivered numerous talks. Of most interest was his highly sought after diary, full of keen, witty and unabashed observations—and often criticisms—of individuals from society, national politics, and his own day-to-day activities. He was largely disconnected from the world of work, save for the exceptions when he reluctantly agreed to practice law. He did not need to make money (though he never felt his income sufficient), so his views of land speculation and the war against the Second Bank of the United States, the panics, and the commercial activities of those around him are particularly thought-provoking.

By 1838 he had proceeded far enough in the world to be summoned back to make an address before his alma mater, and in 1851 he was married to Elizabeth Ingersoll.
