( About the Book Legal history is the study of how law ha...)
About the Book Legal history is the study of how law has evolved over time, and why it has evolved. Legal history parallels the development of civilisations, and is a component of social history. Legal historians record the evolution of laws and provide an analysis of how these laws evolved, so that the origins of various legal concepts can be better understood. Some consider legal history to be a branch of intellectual history. Twentieth century historians assess in a more contextualised manner, much like social historians, viewing legal institutions as complex systems of rules, participants and symbols that have interacted with society to promote changes in certain aspects of civil society. Also in this Book Law office management refers to the management of a law practice. Law firms in the West tend to be composed of a single lawyer, of several lawyers, or of many lawyers, plus support staff such as paralegals, secretaries, and other personnel. Topics included in law office management are: workload management; staff management; financial management; office management; and marketing. ( About the Book Biographical books, or bios, are detaile...)
About the Book Biographical books, or bios, are detailed descriptions of a person's life. A biography is more than simply the basic facts, like education, work, relationships, and death. It portrays a person's experience of major life events. A biography presents a subject's life story, emphasizing certain aspects of his or her life, and including intimate details of their experiences, which may include an analysis of their personality. Biographical works are generally non-fiction, but fictional works can also be used to portray a person's life. An in-depth form of biographical coverage is referred to as legacy writing. An authorized biography refers to a book written with the permission, cooperation, and at times, participation of the subject or the subject's heirs. An autobiography, on the other hand, is written by the person themselves, sometimes with the assistance of a collaborator or “ghostwriter”. ( "Invaluable…many insights into the life and thought of ...)
"Invaluable…many insights into the life and thought of the nineteenth century…. Fisher's comments are stimulating, often barbed….the narrative is smooth-flowing and fascinating."-American Historical Review "An important literary event….an invaluable historical source. Unexcelled." -Pennsylvania History "Fisher was an astute and acerbic commentator on politics and society in Philadelphia, Washington, and the country as a whole during the Civil War. While legal, historical, and literary scholars will mine this diary for its penetrating insights, lovers of history will delight in Fisher's ability to record the quotidian and the monumental with clarity, force, and lasting effect."-Herman Belz, University of Maryland "An indispensable source for the Northern home front during the Civil War."-Mark E. Neely, Jr., The Pennsylvania State University An aristocratic member of a prominent Philadelphia family, Sidney George Fisher (1809-1871) was a prolific man of letters. Between 1834 and 1871, he kept a detailed diary that chronicled not only daily life in America's second city but also the key political, social, and cultural events of the nineteenth century. Published in 1967, Fisher's diary quickly became one of the most remarkable works of its kind; few published diaries are as incisive and illuminating of their era. This book makes available once again the pages of Fisher's diary written during the Civil War. As he wrote on November 9, 1861, "My diary has become little else than a record of the events of the war, which occupies all thoughts and conversation." His "record of the events" is a uniquely valuable portrait of a city, and a nation, at war. Fisher recorded everything from conversations on street corners to arrests of civilians for treason (including some members of his family), critiques of partisan speeches and pamphlets to descriptions of battles, accounts of runaway slaves, and tales of mob violence. At the same time, he reports on dinners, parties, weddings, and funerals among the city's elite. Brilliant journalism, the Diary is rich with Fisher's own observations- on secession, war and peace, on his admiration for Lincoln and his complicated feelings about slavery and emancipation. The Diary, with a new introduction by Jonathan W. White, joins those of George Templeton Strong and Mary Boykin Chesnut as classic windows on American life During the War Between the States. Jonathan W. White's articles on Civil War politics have appeared in such journals as Civil War History, American Nineteenth Century History, The Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography, and Pennsylvania History. Awarded a John T. Hubbell prize for the best article in Civil War History, he is a doctoral candidate in history at the University of Maryland, College Park. (Excerpt from The Trial of the Constitution Following the...)
Excerpt from The Trial of the Constitution Following the course of reasoning thus suggested. One topic Opened the way to another, until at length I ended where the work more appropriately begins,-with a discus sion of the nature of the Constitution itself, and of the powers which it does or must grant to the Government. Over itself, and over the Union. Books, laws, facts, even words and phrases, sometimes assume a new aspect, when seen through the medium of feel ings produced by important events and a novel situation. Like many others, I had been content to sit at the feet of the learned doctors of our law, and accept their interpreta tion as correct. But the war has shed new light on the principles and meaning of our Constitution, and revealed in it imperfections, perhaps also powers, scarcely perceived by its makers, and hidden from the superficial and unsuspecting glances of the people, during our long period of prosperity and peace. He was the son of James L. and Ann Eliza (George) Fisher, and was born in Philadelphia, where he also died.
He graduated from Dickinson College in 1827, read law under Joseph Ingersoll in Philadelphia, and was admitted to the bar a few weeks before he was twenty-one.
The routine of his law practice seems to have engrossed him for many years.
About this time he became interested in farming, and devoting much of his time to Maryland plantations of his in Cecil and Kent counties, he adopted these two names as convenient signatures for his occasional contributions to the newspapers. In 1856 he published a volume of undistinguished verse, Winter Studies in the Country, and wrote for the Philadelphia North American, "Kanzas and the Constitution, " an essay which--endorsing slavery but condemning the political rapaciousness of the South--so recommended itself to a group of Bostonians that they reprinted it as a pamphlet (1856).
Rustic Rhymes, composed largely of two-and-three-stress lines, and The Law of the Territories, urging the retention of the Missouri Compromise, appeared in 1859.
The next year, he published The Laws of Race as Connected with Slavery, an erudite plea for white supremacy, based to a great degree on his acceptance of slavery and his conviction that only people of "Saxon" derivation have any real desire for political freedom. The Trial of the Constitution (1862), his most voluminous work, restates in 390 pages the doctrines he had already promulgated concerning the great national issues of his time.
In the North American Review for July 1864 he published an article, later issued in a pamphlet, called "A National Currency, " upholding in general the policy of the government in issuing legal-tender notes.
He made frequent addresses here and there before associations of farmers, advocating diversification of crops whenever he did not consider it more important to praise Daniel Webster, and to declare the idea of Union the one end to which all other political ideas in America should be made subservient.
His son, named for him, with whom he has sometimes been confused, spelled his first name not Sidney, but Sydney.
Fisher wrote several books and delivered numerous talks. Of most interest was his highly sought after diary, full of keen, witty and unabashed observations—and often criticisms—of individuals from society, national politics, and his own day-to-day activities. He was largely disconnected from the world of work, save for the exceptions when he reluctantly agreed to practice law. He did not need to make money (though he never felt his income sufficient), so his views of land speculation and the war against the Second Bank of the United States, the panics, and the commercial activities of those around him are particularly thought-provoking.

By 1838 he had proceeded far enough in the world to be summoned back to make an address before his alma mater, and in 1851 he was married to Elizabeth Ingersoll.
