Elaine was also an advocate of social issues and the publicity director of the Women’s Division of the State of Israel Bonds, Maryland chapter. As a member of the New York Collegiate Chorale, she had met Marian Anderson, who was also photographed with Sidney. She was described as a “patron of the Art Students League” where Sidney had long taught.
Elaine went on to marry retired NYPD officer Lawrence Richman, took his name, but continued to live in New York in Sidney’s and Elaine’s old apartment on 95th Street until her death. She returned to her first love, her singing. Elaine August died in 2009.
