A professor emeritus at the University of Arizona, he was a noted expert on Geoffrey Chaucer and was frequently consulted on matters of astronomy in Chaucer. He enrolled at the University of Arizona in 1939, but joined the Army after World World War World War II He graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1947 and received his Doctor of Philosophy from Columbia University in 1955, then was a Fulbright Scholar in Ireland. Eisner taught at Oregon State University and Dominican College before returning to the University of Arizona, where he taught for over forty years.
He died on December 18, 2012.
