Sigríður Valgeirsdóttir graduated from the College of Physical Education and Sport in 1942. Then she attended the University of California, where she earned a Master of Arts and teaching credential in 1947. From the State University of New York, Valgeirsdóttir received a Master of Education in 1968 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1974.
Sigríður Valgeirsdóttir started her educational career as a teacher at the College of Physical Education and Sport in 1949. She served there until 1951. Valgeirsdóttir worked at the Teachers College of Iceland in 1982-1991. She was a professor of educational psychology and director of the Institute of Educational Research of Iceland.
Additionally, Sigríður Valgeirsdóttir was a dancer and choreographer. She became a member of the Orchesis dance group at the beginning of 1944. In 1951 she founded the Folk Dance Society of Reykjavik, where she was choreographer and director of Icelandic folk dance performances in Iceland and around the world until 1994. Valgeirsdóttir also served as a choreographer of stage productions at the National Theater of Iceland from 1954 to 1967.
Sigríður Valgeirsdóttir was best known as a choreographer and writer. She also was a holder of the Golden Pin from the Icelandic Sports Union in 1950, the Award from the Gymnastic Society of Reykjavik in 1956, German Cultural Awards for choreography in 1969, the Award from Folk Dance Society of Reykjavik, and the Order of the Falcon from the President of Iceland in 1990. In 2006 Valgeirsdóttir became an honorary member of the Soroptimistaklúbbs Reykjavíkur.
Sigríður Valgeirsdóttir had a husband, Hjörleifi Baldvinssyni, and three children, Dagmar Völu Hjörleifsdóttur, Sigríði Hjörleifsdóttur, and Ingólf Hjörleifsson.
