Background
HOCKING, Silas Kitto was born on March 24, 1850 in St. Stephen’s, Cornwall. 3rd son of James Hocking and Elizabeth Kitto.
(This book is a little gem. It was first published in 1880...)
This book is a little gem. It was first published in 1880 by a Cornish Minister who upped sticks to bang his drum up in the 'grim North', ( including 3 years in Liverpool, which is where this story is primarily set ). Despite the good man of the cloth earning only a fraction of what he should have done, this book gave Silas K Hocking his place in History, as the first author to sell more than a million books in his own life time. Considering the traditional rush from the cemetery to buy all sorts of works of art, music and literature by even the most obscure writers/artists in the event of their passing on, this was indeed an achievement. One read of the first chapter will make you understand why.

"[...]sixpence the gentleman gave him, which was clear profit. The sixpence was evidently a great prize to him, for he looked at it long and earnestly. "Wish I could keep it for mysel'," he muttered; "but it's no go—the guv'nor will 'ave to 'ave it. But the coppers I'll keep 'ginst bad times. Here, Nell," he said, nudging his sister, "you keep these 'ere coppers; and then if the guv'nor axes me if I has any more, I can tell him no."[...]".

This evangelistic work for the youthful reader by Silas K. Hocking (1850-1935) is about two waifs, Benny and his younger sister Nelly. They flee an abusive father and take to the streets of Liverpool to provide the meager necessities of life. Nelly has a weak constitution and Benny considers a life of crime as a means to alleviate their suffering. This road, however, goes against his conscience and he promises his sister to always be honest. Her Benny is a tale filled with numerous trials and tribulations.

(*From the author who was the first to sell a million copi...)
*From the author who was the first to sell a million copies of a book in a writer’s own lifetime. *Facsimile copy of the lesser-known illustrated version, published around the 10th anniversary of its first release. *Illustrations maximised, many enlarged and some digitally improved to enhance viewing on Kindle’s and other Ebook readers. If I asked you the question : “Who was the first author to sell a million copies of a book in his or her own lifetime?” would you know the answer? To be fair, some do, but the vast majority of people do not. Well, here he is, or to be more accurate, here is the book which brought him this accolade – ‘Her Benny – A Tale of Victorian Liverpool’, by the no-longer (sadly) celebrated million-plus selling author, the Reverend Silas K Hocking. First, the book. Her Benny, to use its most common title, (the sub-title is used on some editions, omitted on others), is an unapologetically Protestant Christian flavoured tale of two Liverpool waifs, young brother and sister, Benny and Nelly Bates. They are starved and abused and sent out to scrape as best a living as they can: Nelly selling matches, Benny portering at the ferry terminal. But things get so bad, that Benny, after his young fragile sister gets a terrible beating, decides enough is enough, takes whatever provisions he can find, grabs his sister by the hand, and leaves home. It is here I have to stop as more would put this little blurb in spoiler territory. If you are new to the tale, and the flavour appeals, it won’t disappoint, or you may be one of the many, many people who read this a long, long time ago and wish to read it again. Here is your chance. The author : the Reverend Silas Kitto Hocking was born in Cornwall in 1850. By the time he was an adult he had not taken up the opportunity to work in the family-owned tin-mine but instead became an ordained Methodist minister. It is this ministry which saw the good reverend bang his drum up in the northwest of England, but primarily Liverpool, Southport and Oldham. He was also a published author, some titles doing well, others poorly, and some not in book form ever but were serialisations in various magazines and periodicals. But one book, inspired by the poverty stricken families and waifs of inner city Liverpool of the time (the 1870s), was to make him – and the book (for so many years anyway) famous nationally, and later on, internationally, with the book selling phenomenally well while he was still alive, and with Silas K Hocking becoming the first ever author to reach and surpass the million copies sold in an author’s own lifetime. The good reverend died at the age of 85 in 1935. Interestingly though, he only ever made a total of thirty pounds in author’s fees from Her Benny. This edition of the book is the 1890 Illustrated Edition. In the author’s own words, he tells the reader in a preface ‘ the publishers’ decided the book needed a new overcoat’, and so here it is – Her Benny – A Tale of Victorian Liverpool – the 1890 De Luxe Illustrated Edition.

(This book is an illustrated version of Her Benny, A Story...)
This book is an illustrated version of Her Benny, A Story of Street Life by Silas K. Hocking. The author: “My pastoral work, during a three years' residence in Liverpool, called me frequently into some of the poorest neighbourhoods of that town, where I became acquainted with some of the originals of this story. It was not until I had seen the little Arabs of the streets in their homes—if such haunts of wretchedness be worthy of that name—that I felt that interest in, and sympathy for them, that I have experienced ever since. Getting to know them in their homes, I was glad to stop and speak to them in the streets, and give them a word of sympathy and encouragement. They are not all bad, as many people seem to think. Many of them try hard to earn an honest living, though they find it a difficult matter, especially when at home they receive no encouragement, while in the streets temptation is being continually put in their way by those of whom "Perks" so justly complained.”
