Ardent supporter of Andrew Jackson, 1832. Member United States Senate from New York, January 1, 1833-December, 1844, supported Martin Van Buren’s policies, chairman finance committee, 1836-1841, worked for tariff reduction and independent treasury system. Governor New York, 1845-1847, not re-elected because role in anti-rent riots alienated “Hunkers.”.
