Dewitt, Simeon was born on December 25, 1756 in Wawarsing, New York, United States. Son of Doctor Andries and Jannetje (Vernooy) DeW.

Education

Bachelor of Arts, Queen’s College (now Rutgers), 1776, Master of Arts, 1788.

Career

To join New York Militia. Served as assistant geographer Continental Army, 1778-1780, chief geographer 1780-1781. Surveyor general State of New York, 1784-1834.

A commissioner to settle New York-Pennsylvania boundary dispute, 1786-1787. Surveyor of various canal routes for New York. Published map of New York State, 1802.

Regent, then vice-chancellor University State of New York, 1798-1829, chancellor, 1829-1834. A founder New York Society for Promotion of Agriculture, Arts and Manufactures (later became part of Albany Institute), vice president Albany Institute, many years. Member American Philosophical Society Author: The Elements of Perspective (collection of writings), 1813.
