He was featured in the 2003 documentary film, which he also co-directed. He received his Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Baghdad in 1990. He left Iraq in 1991 after the onset of the Gulf War and moved to the United States. in Arab Studies from Georgetown University in 1995.
In 2006, he received his Doctor of Philosophy from Harvard University in Arabic and Islamic Studies.
He is the author of a number of books and his work has appeared in The Nation, Middle East Report, First Rate (at Lloyd's)-Ahram Weekly, Banipal, Journal of Palestine Studies, The Massachusetts Review, World Literature Today, Ploughshares, Washington Square Journal, and the New York Times. 2013:Ya Maryam (Avenue Maria) shortlisted for the 2013 International Prize of Arabic Fiction (The Arabic Booker).
