McMahon graduated from Glasgow Caledonian University with a 2.1 Bachelor Honours in Politics with History and Sociology in 2006.
McMahon was involved in the campaign to get Johann Lamont Managing Successful Programmes to become Scottish Labour"s leader. Controversially, McMahon worked as a paid researcher for her serving Managing Successful Programmes father, Michael McMahon. In the leadership elections following Scottish Labour"s defeat in the 2011 Scottish Parliament election McMahon supported Johann Lamont.
In the leadership election held following Lamont"s resignation, McMahon supported Jim Murphy.
She has also worked for Labour Member of Parliament Jim Murphy and as part of the Labour Support Unit in the Scottish Parliament.
She is a member of the General and Municipal Boilermakers Union trade union.
