Went to Massachusetts in ship Abigail, 1635, arrived in Boston, October 1635. Admitted as member church 1635, admitted as freeman of colony, 1636. Chosen to serve on commission for military discipline, 1636.
One of 3 arbiters to whom citizens of Boston had to submit their cases before they could proceed to law. Governor Massachusetts, 1636. Took side of Mistress Anne Hutchison in theological dispute, thus destroyed his career in America.
Unsuccessful candidate for government Massachusetts, 1637, returned to England, 1637. Joint treasurer of navy, 1639. Knighted by Charles I, 1640.
Elected to both Short and Long Parliaments, 1640, instrumental in securing condemnation of Strafford and Laude. Helped Roger Williams secure Rhode Island charter which bore Vane’s signature as one of commissioner for plantations, 1644. Instrumental in having rescinded the commission granted to William Coddington, 1652.
Leading counciler of England. Following Restoration he was exempted from act of indemnity. Tried for treason, after 2 years in prison, found guilty.
