宋 紫石
Sō Shiseki was born in Edo (now Tokyo) in 1716.
He went to Nagasaki (about 1751) and studied under Yuhi Kumashiro. When Sung Tzuyuan, a Chinese painter came there (1758), he studied under him and adopted his master's family name (So).
He returned to Edo where he became famous as an exponent of the Nanhin school, which was realistic and precise. He was especially good at painting flowers and birds with a free use of colors.
Shizan, his son, and Shiko, his grandson, also were well-known artists.
