In 1275 Sogen became a priest under the guidance of Shoichi Kokushi. He's studied for 20 years under Bukko Zenji and other high priests. Later in 1321 Sogen became chief priest of the Nanzenji Temple in Kyoto. He also was accorded the name of Soho Zenji by the Emperor Gouda.
