In the Tembun Era (1532-1554) Sogo fought Katsumoto Hosokawa on the side of his elder brother, Chokei Miyoshi. He was defeated by priest-soldiers in Kii Province (Wakayama Prefecture). While nursing his wounds at Arima hot springs in Settsu Province (Hyogo Prefecture), he went to the Yuyama Gongen Shrine to worship, mounting a gray horse.
