When the Tokugawa Shogunate opened its Shogi Institute, Sokei Ohashi was appointed its director because of his distinguished skill in the game. When Sokan Ito joined the Shogi Institute, the Ito and Ohashi families became the two head families of the game.
Sokei's son, Soko, who was also a good player, became Sokei II. Sokei II died in 1660. The Ohashi family became extinct with the death of Sokin, the 12th head of the family, in 1910.
