Sono Masazo was born on January 1, 1886 in Kyoto, Japan.
Sono was a student of Kawai Jittaro at the University of Kyoto. After graduation in 1910 Sono went to Europe, where he heard lectures at the Collège de France.
Having returned from France Sono became a professor in Kyoto in 1921. At the suggestion of Kawai, he specialized in algebra and was one of those who introduced modern abstract algebra into Japan. One of his disciples, Akizuki Yasuo (1902-1984), continued the algebraic tradition in Kyoto.
In 1934 Sono was appointed dean of the university's Science Department. Later he wrote a two-volume treatise on the chronology of the Nihon Shoki. In 1968, Sono was honored as a person of special cultural merit.
