Sonoda was the owner of a large collection of old Chinese seals, many of which are still regarded as masterpieces. He founded the Heian Calligraphists Association with his colleagues and served as its adviser. After World War II when the Japan Art Exhibition added calligraphy to their items for exhibition, Sonoda was appointed a judge and an adviser to the society. He held the position of manager of Japan Calligraphy Association.
Sonoda established his reputation as a master engraver of seals at an early age and was highly esteemed for his excellent taste, serenity and grace. Later he became associated with such literary men as Tessai Tomioka, Konan Naito and others of the Kyoto school.
