Sonosuke Sawamura made his debut at the Azumaza Theater, Asakusa, at the age of only four under the name of Sonosuke.
He became a star actor after he played the part of Akoya in the play Kotozeme at the Ichimuraza Theater (1906).
He participated in the new theater movement of Sadanji Ichikawa and Kaoru Osanai. When the Teikoku (Imperial) Theatre was established (1911), he became one of its star players. He was good at playing female and male parts in historical and contemporary plays alike.
He died of sudden illness while appearing at the Daikokuza Theater in Yotsuya, Tokyo, dressed as Osato, wife of Sawaichi, in the play Tsubosaka Reigenki.
