Ahn received a Bachelor of Science degree from Seoul National University in 1982. Two years later he earned his Master of Science degree from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology. Also in 1992, Soonho was given a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Auburn University.
Ahn began his career as a research engineer at CJ Cheil Jedang in 1984 and had held it for three years. In 1992, he was appointed a research professor of Chemical Engineering Department at Auburn University Space Power Institute. Then in 1996, Soonho was appointed a vice president of LG Chem Energy Solution, where he worked until 2014.
In 2014, he became a professor of energy and chemical engineering department at Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology. Then in 2015, Ahn held a position of a senior vice president of Next Generation Batteries R&D at Samsung SDI Co., Ltd. The same year he took the same position of Batteries Development at that company. In 2016, Soonho became a senior vice president of Next Generation Batteries and Materials Innovation at Samsung SDI Co., Ltd. Since 2018 he has been a global head of battery developments in Apple, Inc.
Ahn is a member of Korean Electrochemical Society.
Soonho Ahn has three children.
